Bastrop Independent School District (Bastrop, TX) will share insights from virtual work-based learning provided to CTE students during the 2020-2021 school year, which included student access to entry-level networking and social capital through mentorship. The presentation will include both school and business partner insights from the district’s virtual mentoring program.

Dr. Steven Henn
EdD, Coordinator Career & Technical Education

Dr. Steven Henn has been involved with education for over 20 years. He started in the outdoor education setting. He spent 10 seasons at an outdoor ed campus in the Ozarks of Missouri, and another 4 seasons in northern Michigan. In 2007 he entered the formal classroom in St. Louis, MO, where he taught various classes at the high-school level, including English Language Arts, Community Service, and Senior Capstone/Practicum. Steven received his doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 2020; his dissertation focused on effective CTE programming at a center for innovation in a rural district just north of Denver, CO. Steven joined the Bastrop ISD CTE team in July of 2020 and currently focuses on developing a highly effective CTE program through coaching, community partnerships, and program design.

Shane Thomas
Co-Founder & Chief Program Officer, CareerCraft

Shane is the former Work-Based Learning Program Specialist at the Texas Education Agency. In this role he was responsible for creating a statewide framework for work-based learning designed to define the key elements of high-quality work-based learning experiences. Prior to joining TEA, Shane served as Career Education and Workforce Partnerships Coordinator with Dallas Independent School District where he was charged with aligning Career and Technical Education (CTE) programmatic offerings to support local labor market needs. Shane also served as DECA’s Director of Competitive Events where he was responsible for the implementation of the organization’s national Competitive Events Program. Shane began his career as a Marketing Teacher and Cooperative Education Coordinator with Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia.
